CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN

Intro: Chapter 27 starts with the "Religious" folk trying to find a way to put Christ to death, since their previous attempts had failed, while he was "daily with them in the temple." This is a mock trial with no real evidence against our Lord (Lk. 23:1-2). Any old port in the storm will do, if you are trying to find a way to crucify someone. These are secular accusations against the Lord.

27:1 They change the charges when Christ is brought to Pilot - (Lk. 23:1-2) - Rebellion and Sedition.

27:3 Judas changes his mind, probably thought he would use power to overcome Christ being tried.

27:4 "The" innocent blood - Surely a reference to Christ's blood. Christ is the only man that ever walked on earth that did not have "guilty" or corrupt blood. Jesus Christ had God's own blood running through his veins (Acts 20:28).

Six witnesses to Christ's innocence:

[1]. Judas (vs. 4)
[2]. Pilate's wife (vs. 19)
[3]. Pilate himself (vs. 24)
[4]. Herod (Lk. 23:15)
[5]. Malefactor (Lk. 23:41)
[6]. The Centurion (Lk. 23:47)

27:5 The money never looks as good after Satan gets through with him. Realizing he is getting no where fast (v. 4) he casts the "blood money" back at them, and goes and hangs himself (2 Sam. 17:23).

According to (Acts 1:25) Judas went to "his own place." Studying this personality, you will find that he was "a devil" (Jn. 6:70-71), and "his own place" is the bottomless pit, of which he is King over (Rev. 9:11).

Judas and the Anti-Christ are the only two people in scripture that are called the "Son of Perdition" - (Jn. 17:12; 2 Thess. 2:3).

Judas hangs himself (Gal. 3:13) and takes his place where the scripture says and it is fulfilled (Acts 1:25).

27:6 Wrong purpose for blood (Deut. 23:18)

27:8 Acts 1:18-19

27:9 This is not found in Jeremiah but (Zech. 11:13). Notice "SPOKEN" not "WRITTEN". It was probably spoken by Jeremiah, but was Zechariah wrote it down in His book.

27:10 "me" - Christ talking.

27:11 Confirmation

27:12 (Isa. 53:7) - "so he openeth not his mouth."

27:15 "Wont" - old English meaning "inhabit of / use to."

27:16 Barabbas - means son of the fathers.

27:18 "Envy" - This is the real motive for the crucifixion. See (Prov. 14:30; 27:4)

27:19 Pilate gets pressure from his wife. She calls him a "just" man!

27:20 Here we go again with the Chief Priests. Once again the majority (multitude) is wrong.

27:22 "What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?" This is the question that every man, woman, boy, girl has to answer some time in their life. What are you gonna do with Jesus… receive him - or reject him?

27:23 The Jews are directly responsible for Jesus Christ being crucified, even though it was the Romans that carried it out. (Jn. 18:29-19:23; Lk. 23:18-23).

27:24 Here you have a good picture of a person that believes water can wash away his sins. We call them Campbellites. Pilot is guilty, and water can not cleanse his sin. Only the blood that Jesus Christ shed can cleanse him from sin (Col. 1:14; 1 Jn. 1:7-9).

27:25 Here is the statement that God holds the Jews to for over 2000 years. They are guilty for over 2000 years.

27:28 This is not his robe, but a robe of "mockery".

27:29 Here the devil is pouring it on. More mockery of his claim to royalty.

27:30 This is how man deals with a loving, compassionate, long-suffering, patient, kind, merciful God - they hate his guts!

27:31 Christ never had a robe (vs. 35). Garments, Raiment, Vesture!

27:32 Cyrene - Capital of a province in Libya, northern Africa, about 11 miles south the Mediterranean. Simon is probably a Hamite, but not clear.

27:33 Golgotha - The place of the skull (Mk 15:22). Calvary (Lk. 23:33).

27:34 Vinegar mingled with Gall - This potion was used to help alleviate suffering (Prov. 31:5-7). Christ refused this potion so he could bear the full weight of suffering for our sins in his right mind!!!

27:37 THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS - This superscription is written in 3 languages (Lk. 23:38), which covers all mankind:

Greek - Japheth

Hebrew - Shem

Latin - Ham

27:38 Two thieves - One on each hand (Jn. 19:32). Bullinger teaches that there were 4 people crucified with Christ… 2 thieves, 2 malefactors.

27:40 The Pharisees never did get over this statement. Here the devil speaks through the Pharisees, tempting Christ once again, to go against scripture. Psalm 22:1-31 gives the details of what came against our Lord when he was on the cross.

27:42 This is true of us and Christ. Christ CAN SAVE others, but in order to do so he CAN NOT save himself!

27:45 Noon to 3 o'clock

27:46 Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani -

Eli - is Hebrew. Lama - is Aramaic. He spoke Hebrew & Aramaic here, but Matthew is written in Greek!

[1]. God won't forsake his own son - he is part of the Trinity!

[2]. The "man" is forsaken by God! Notice - MY GOD, not MY FATHER!

Six natures involved in the person of Christ:

Soul - God the Father manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16) (Acts 2:27-31)
Spirit - The Holy Spirit
Body - Son of God

27:47 Malachi 4 - John the Baptist

27:48 (Jn. 19:29) - this time the drink is just vinegar, without wine, and he takes it. Notice that the suffering Lord does not get water, just as a soul suffering in hell will never get water.

27:51 The veil in the temple being "rent in twain" shows that the way to God for all has been opened. Previously only the High Priest was allowed into the Holy of Holies. This is not so anymore… Christ has opened the way for all sinners to have access to the Father. See (Heb. 6:19; 9:23-25).

[1]. The "Veil" is a type of Christ's flesh (Heb. 10:20), and since it has been rent we may "come boldly to the throne of grace" (Heb. 4:14-16).

27:52 Some of the graves were opened, but it does not say all of them.

27:53 These bodies come up only "after" the Resurrection. The graves were opened (vs. 52), but the bodies only come up after Christ's resurrection.

27:54 Conversion at Christ's death.

27:57 Secret disciple! Are you one?

27:59 When Jesus came into this world he was wrapped in grave clothes (Lk. 2:7).

27:62 "The next day" - Thursday!

27:63 "deceiver" - more hypocrisy from the old council.

27:65 "make it as sure as ye can" - Pilate is being sarcastic here, since he does not believe.

There is no way that this tomb can be made sure, since the scriptures are clear that Jesus Christ would rise from the dead under his own power!

(Jn. 10:18) No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
