CHAPTER FOURTEEN
14:1-2 Herod had a guilty conscience for killing John and perhaps he knew something of the prophesies of the resurrection and return of Elijah. (16:14)
14:3-7 Even though Bible preaching is hated, it produces a certain fear, which even cleans the world up a little (Mk. 6:20). You don't need too much imagination to guess what kind of a dance it was.
14:8-12 Herod, as most political leaders, fears everything except God. An unsaved woman makes a religion out of love.
[1]. Herod's conscience is weakened by John's preaching (Mk. 6:20).
[2]. It is seared by a dance (Mk. 6:22).
[3]. It is dead when confronted by a decision to receive Christ (Lk. 23:8-12)
John is beheaded - (Rev. 11:3-10; 20:3-6)
14:13-14 The time and setting is (Mk. 6; Lk. 9; Jn. 6)
- moved with compassion, (9:36; 18:25; Mk. 1:41; 6:34)
14:15-19 The time is now past - post supper (6-8). Prophetically, the scene pictures the feeding of the remnant of Israel during the Tribulation. (Rev. 12:1-15; Mich. 7:14-15; Jer. 50:19,20; Eze. 20:35; Lam. 5:9)
14:20-21 Additional details:
[1]. Sat down by companies 50 in a rank - (Mk. 6:39-40)
[2]. Loaves are blessed and broken before they are given (26:26). The Word has to be broken and given out (Lk. 24:45). The Christian has to be broken to be a blessing.
[3]. John says there was more left over than when they started.
14:22-25 Jesus often withdraws for special seasons of prayer and many of these are lonely vigils, when no one's praying with Him. (Mk. 1:35; 6:40; Lk. 9:18; 9:28; 22:44)
[1]. "A mountain apart"
(a). Christ is now "on high" praying for His saints
(b). They are in a dispensation of nighttime. (Jn. 9:4,5; Matt. 13:43; Mk. 13:34,35; 1 Thess. 5:1-10)
(c). The wind is contrary to the saints. (Ecc. 11:4; Eph. 4:14)
(d). Christ will return in the fourth watch 3-6am.
14: 26-29 "If it be thou" - set your identities straight before you launch out on the water.
