Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Tim. 2:15

CHAPTER NINETEEN

19:1-9 "every cause" comes from (Deut. 24:1-3). "some uncleanness" does not necessarily mean fornication. Jesus says fornication becomes grounds for divorce and remarriage, although the remarriage is cautioned against in (1 Cor. 7:27,28).

Three grounds for divorce:

[1]. death, (Rom. 7:1-4; 1 Cor. 7;39).
[2]. fornication, (Matt. 19:9; 1 Cor. 6:16).
[3]. desertion, (1 Cor. 7:15,27).

What constitutes a marriage, (2 Sam. 11:27).

19:10-12 If you are able to stay from women, do it. (1 Cor. 7:1-4). (Prov. 18:22; 19:14 provides balance.)

19:13-15 Already commented on in (18:2-6). "Suffer" is defined in (Acts 21:39).

19:16-19 Lesson on witnessing:

[1]. Most people believe that eternal life is contingent upon doing a good thing.

[2]. Jesus forced the man to recognize who Jesus was - GOD OR MAN!

* keeping the commandments, left covet out until last.

19:20-22 According to the text, the rich young ruler is in the position that the apostle Paul was in before his conversion to Christ (cf. Phil. 3:4-7). He was like Cornelius (Acts 10). He is as righteous as a human being can be outside of Christ. One might say that he was a "doer of the law" (Rom. 10:1-5), but this does not guarantee his salvation, for the law is said to be a "schoolmaster to bring us to Christ" (Gal. 4-5). If this young man is not brought to Christ, then the law has failed to teach him what it should (see Rom. 8:3). Here, then, we have a perfect picture of New Testament salvation given in an Old Testament setting, with a Jew in the transition period, seeking righteousness (Rom. 10:1-4), and what follows illustrates (Rom. 9:30-33).

"What lack I yet?" Well, you lack a payment for sins. You lack a sense of guilt. You lack a knowledge of the laws you have broken. You lack assurance of salvation, and you lack peace of heart and mind. Isn't that enough? He didn't lack morals, money, zeal, interest, health, or common sense. Yet in (Mk. 10:21), our Lord says "ONE THING thou lackest."

19:23-26 Riches obscure faith; riches hinder humility; riches magnify the world, not the Lord.

19:24 - everyone forgets Jesus could just be pain sarcastic.

19:27-30 Peter asked a selfish but practical question.

Regeneration: used only twice in the Bible.

[1]. (Matt. 19:28) - new birth of earth.
[2]. (Tit. 2:5) - new birth of individual.

"Throne of glory" is always earthly throne of David. See (Matt. 25:31, Jer. 14:21).
