CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Review of Chapter 12

[1]. Messiah has come (1)

[2]. Identified himself as Son of David (3)

[3]. Proved it with signs and wonders (13)

[4]. Rejected and called a devil (24)

[5]. Warning is given that God will deal with Gentiles (21)

[6]. Near end of the chapter - unpardonable sin is committed (31)

[7]. Christ pronounces a Gentile judgment on Israel (40-42)

[8]. Closes by likening the Jewish rejection to a demon-possessed man (45)

[9]. Christ renounces His own family connection with Israel (49,50)

[10]. Goes out of the house (13:1) - sets by the sea - a picture of Gentiles (Rev. 17:15; Isa. 60:5)

Seven parables - two are explained.

Twelve kingdom parables - three are interchangeable "the sower," "the mustard seed," "the leaven."

Sower appears in (Mk. 4, Lk. 8).

First parable study of Christ's work.

Second parable Devil's work.

13:24-30 Satan is found as an enemy within the ranks of believers.

[1]. Sower - Son of man (vs. 37)

[2]. Field is the world (vs. 38) - not the church.

[3]. Children of the kingdom - saved of this age? (8:12). Born of a good seed (1 Pet. 1:23)

[4]. Harvest at end of world "aion" age as in 2 Cor. 4:4; Gal. 1:4; 1 Tim. 6:17.

[5]. While men slept - 1 Thess. 5:1-6.

[6]. A gathering together of the tares - takes place before the mill.

[7]. Children of the wicked one - Satan's seed (vs. 38).

[8]. The reapers - Rev. 14; Matt. 24:30,31.

[9]. The field (world) becomes the father's kingdom (41-43) - (Rev. 11:15).

13:31-32 Dual application - appears in (Lk. 13:18,19). Sowed in his field = world; mustard seed associated with faith (Matt. 17:20). In Luke the faith is in the "kingdom of God" which is entered into in this age by the new birth. (Jn. 3:6; Rom. 14:17) In Matthew the faith is "in the world" and there won't be much faith when the Lord shows up (Lk. 18:8). This faith becomes a tree which becomes a resting place for birds (Matt. 13:19; Mk. 4:4,5; Lk. 8:5-12) - which are demons. The tree is like one in (Dan. 4). As a type of the Anti-Christ kingdom. (Eze. 31:1-6).

13:33 (Thyatira Rev. 2:20) The typical liberal and Catholic interpretation is that the woman is the church and the leaven the Gospel.

[1]. Leaven is always false doctrine - (Matt. 16:6-12; Gal. 5:9; 1 Cor. 5:6-8).

[2]. The church is never called "the woman." The woman is found in (Rev. 17:1-5).

[3]. The parable is also found in (Lk. 13:20,21). So it has kingdom of God application.

13:34-35 Quote from (Ps. 78:1-3); see (Prov. 26:7-9).

13:44 (Sardis Rev. 3:1,2)

[1]. The treasure is Israel - (Deut. 31:17; Isa. 54:8; Ex. 19:5; Ps. 135:4)

[2]. The field is the world - see (vs. 38)

[3]. The man is Christ - (13:3,24,37)

[4]. The buying is Christ purchasing the world with is blood.

13:45,46 (Philadelphia)

[1]. Pearl is usually a female person - only precious stone which is an organism. (Prov. 31:10, 11:22; Matt. 7:6; Prov. 3:13-16; Zech. 9:16; Mal. 3:17).

[2]. Price of purchase - (Eph. 5:25; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; Acts 20:28).

(a). Pearl is an organism.

(b). Would be ruined by division.

(c). Found in muddy places.

(d). Formed because of irritation - foreign object.

(e). Favorite head or necklace dress for kings and queens.

13:47-50 Good and bad fish, saved and lost men (Ecc. 9:12; Mk. 1:17) The angels may have some definition in (1 Cor. 6:1-4 and Matt. 22:30).

13:51-52 They understood what they would, but had limitations (Jn. 16:12; Acts 26:16).

[1]. Good scribes - (Ezra 7:6), bad ones - (Matt. 23:23).

[2]. Good scribe is a householder - a steward (Lk. 16:1-12)

[3]. As a good steward over his household (Heb. 3:3-5) he has charge of the treasures

(Ps. 119:162). The treasures are the good things in the heart (Matt. 12:35).

[4]. Old and new must refer to a relationship between Old Testament and New Testament.

13:53-58 They resented his claim to authority, deity, power, teachings, and true followers.

(Mk. 6:5) - healing not a mighty work.
