CHAPTER FIVE

Chapter 5 starts off with Paul rebuking the Corinthians for sins that are not… “named among the Gentiles…” and he tells them what needs to be done in this instance.

5:1 The reason for the “rod” of (4:21) is due to fornication. This could also be incest, provided that the mother is the physical mother of the person doing the fornicating.

5:2 The Corinthians are “puffed up” - proud, and have done nothing to rectify the situation.
Taken Away - The Lord killing, or he is put out of the assembly.

5:3 Present in Spirit - Your frame of mind. How you think about things, in particular, this issue.
Paul already made his judgment without having to be there in the flesh. A preacher once said, “there are some sins that you don’t have to pray about, you already know that they are sin.”

5:4 Noticed that this is done “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” which fits with the scripture -
(2 Cor 13:1) This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

“My spirit” - Paul giving his approval, his frame of mind!

This judgment is done “with the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Tim. 2:19)

5:5 This person is turned over to Satan so that he might get right (1 Tim. 1:20). The only way to do this is through prayer.

Spirit - the complete man. This has to do with his testimony. This person is saved (vs. 11), and does finally get right.

“Day of the Lord Jesus” - His second coming.

5:6 Leaven here has to do with the conduct of a person and not doctrine as in (Matt. 16:6).

5:7 You should not mix leaven with unleavened (2 Cor. 6:15). Even though this person is saved, he is likened to leaven, which messes up the whole lump.

5:8 Leaven - false doctrine, bad people, wrong actions.

5:9 This Epistle is not in the canon of scripture. God obviously did not want it in or it would be in. Paul wrote 13 letters during his ministry. We have them in our hands as God wants them.

Paul is saying that we are not to mix with these people, but have to be near them if we are to witness to them (vs. 10). Don’t condone their sins.

5:10 We have to keep company with these in order to witness to them, otherwise we would not be here, and they would surely perish.

5:11 “called a brother” - not discussing the two natures a christian has. Has to do with not having fellowship with him.

Paul lumps other sins in with this sin of the flesh - covetous, idolaters, railers, drunkards, extortioners. If we can’t eat with the fornicator, why do we continue to eat with the others?

5:12 Paul doesn’t have to do anything to judge them that “are without” - they are unsaved (Jn. 3:18). Christians should judge their own.

5:13 God judges the lost. We are to “put away… that wicked person.”
