CHAPTER ONE
Corinthians - Means carnal! This is the most carnal church that Paul dealt with in his ministry.
This book has lots of Rebukes!
Charismatics love to stay in Corinthians, always worried about the “Gifts” and not the “Fruit”. Fruit comes when you are surrendered to Christ.
Outline of First Corinthians:
I. Greetings and introduction - 1:1-9
II. Party strife within the church - 1:10-4:21
III. Immorality, lawsuits, bodily sanctity - 5:1-6:21
IV. Marriage and celibacy - 7:1-40
V. Christian rights and responsibility - 8:1-11:1
VI. Christians in public worship - 11:2-34
VII. Place and significance of spiritual gifts - 12:1-14:40
VIII. Resurrection - fundamental to Christian faith - 15:1-58
IX. Conclusion - 16:1-24
1:1 It is God that called Paul to be an Apostle.
“to be” - called apostle (words that are not in the original text, were put in for sense). The translators or of The King James Bible were honest enough to put them in “italics” to show that they were not in the original text.
“our” - needed for proper English.
“Sosthenes” - (means = Saviour of his nation) A Christian with whom Paul wrote the first letter to the Corinthians.
1:2 “Church of God” - name for the body of Christ (1 Cor. 10:32, Gal. 1:13; 1 Tim. 3:15). Reference is to the saved ones at Corinth.
“their” - saints away from Corinth
“ours” - saints in Corinth
1:3 Magnification of Christ (vs. 1-3)
1:5 “enriched” - by gifts that were given
“by him” - Christ
1:6 Proof that he knows Christ (vs. 5)
1:8 You can’t lose your salvation! (Matt. 24:13) - reference to people that endure till end of tribulation, since works are involved during tribulation for salvation.
1:9 God is faithful - (vs. 8)
1:10 Paul again magnifies the Lord Jesus Christ.
“All speak the same thing” - they can’t do it since they don’t all have the same authority. If you have more than one authority (Bible) then they will at some point contradict each other. This will then make you or some other person the authority, and not God’s word.
Paul's prayer not answered - divisions present!
1:11 “contentions” - Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. (Prov. 13:10)
1:12 Paul - Dry Cleaners, those that don’t Baptize
Apollos - Jews
Cephas (Peter) - Catholics
Christ - Campbellites, those who over emphasize water baptism.
1:13 Christ divided - NO! Paul crucified - NO! Baptized in name of Paul - NO!
1:14 Paul is glad that he did baptize Corinthians - reason (vs. 15).
Paul was an evangelist not a pastor.
1:16 Paul did baptize, but he wasn't sent to do so.
1:17 Baptism isn't part of the gospel. Paul was sent to preach the gospel (1 Cor. 15:1-4).
Peter is unaware of the Gospel in Acts 2! The Gospel was given to Paul (Gal. 1:11-12).
A person is saved by believing the Gospel.
Not exclusive - Paul’s primary commission is to preach the Gospel, even though he did baptize some.
1:18 Preaching of the cross - foolishness to the lost, but it is the Power of God to the saved.
Content of the message (vs. 23) makes it Foolishness, and Power.
1:19 (Isa. 29:14)
1:20 Scribe - Bible Reviser
Made Foolish - Yes!
Virgin Birth (vs. 25) - The world thinks that it is foolishness to believe in the virgin birth.
1:21 God’s Wisdom verses the World’s wisdom (college).
God’s High and Holy calling which is foolish - PREACHING!
1:22 Racial difference - God is a racist!
The nation of Israel begins with signs (Ex. 4).
Charismatics like to put a lot of emphasis on “sign gifts” - Healing's, Miracles, Tongues (1 Cor. 14). Sign gifts are given to Israel to show that God is dealing with them as a nation.
1:23 But - against (22)
1:24 Called - saved
Christ the power of God - (Rom. 1:4)
1:25 (Isa 55:9) - “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
1:26 Brethren - saved
The result of the flesh is - “not many”. Not many smart or wise.
1:28 Base - despised
1:29 The reason God uses the humble/base is no there is no glorying!
1:30 Of him - God
God put us in Christ, and made Christ something to us.
We need these 4 things - wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption; they only come through Jesus Christ.
1:31 Only reason to Glory - in the Lord!
