CHAPTER TWO

2:1 Paul didn’t come with good grammar - “rude in speech”

“excellency of speech” - putting on the dog, or trying to impress someone.

“testimony of God” - same as the testimony of Christ (1:6), the gospel of Christ.

2:2 Among you - Corinthians
Have you trusted Christ - unsaved
Is Christ crucified in you - saved

2:3 Weakness - probably a reference to his physical condition due to stonings, beatings, and other things of like manner (2 Cor. 11:24-27).
Fear and much Trembling - Paul probably afraid that God won’t use him. He is totally dependent on God.

2:4 Paul’s message is directly from God. It has real power behind it! Man’s words are powerless.
Enticing words of man’s wisdom - Words used to tickle someone's ears. Smooth, slick, silky words… kinda like the devil uses.
See (2 Pet. 2:18; Jude 16)

2:5 The reason why is in (vs. 4).

2:6 This isn't worldly wisdom.
There are two kinds of wisdom: Worldly & Godly (Jas. 3:14-17).

2:7 Wisdom of God - A mystery hidden till given to Paul (Col. 1:27)
(Rom. 1:1-5:16,25-26; 1 Cor. 2:9-16; Gal. 1:12,16; Eph. 1:3-8)

2:8 Reason God kept it hidden was so Christ could fulfill scripture, die on the cross and redeem mankind.

2:9 Quotes (Isa. 64:4)

2:10 Only revelation about these things comes from the Holy Spirit (vs. 14), the “natural man” doesn't get them.
The Holy Spirit sustains us through doubts about what is revealed.

2:11 Four Spirits:

[1]. Spirit of God
[2]. Spirit of Man
[3]. Spirit of Satan
[4]. Spirit of Beast

The Holy Spirit reveals to man things about himself.

2:12 “We” - Christians
Spirit of the world - All men assembled

2:12 Spirit of God - the Holy Spirit given to us at the new birth. We have God’s mind on certain matters. He reveals the things that he has “freely” given to us.

2:13 This verse is used by Charismatics to teach speaking in tongues for this age.
The words of the Holy Spirit are - Scripture.

Comparing spiritual things with spiritual - Rightly dividing God’s word (2 Tim. 2:15).

2:14 Self explanatory - Only way to understand spiritual things is to be Born again and have the Holy Spirit inside you. (Jn. 14:16-17, {26}; 16:13)

Three steps in growth:

[1]. Natural (2:14) - Lost
[2]. Carnal (3:1) - Babies
[3]. Spiritual (2:15) - Grown

2:15 Judgeth all things - all matters, actions, things that claim to be of God. The basis for this judgment is the Word of God (vs. 13).

We are to judge things not people. The world likes to use “Judge not, lest ye be judged,” as a way to get out from under someone that is trying to witness to them about Christ.

The Book judges (us), not people!!

Christians will judge fallen Angels at the White Throne Judgment (1 Cor. 6:3).

2:16 No one can instruct the Lord - he knows all things.
Christians have the mind of Christ now, not a reference to the future. The mind of Christ is contain in God’s word… The Holy Bible!!
