Lesson Eighteen
Jehoshaphat
(2 Chron. 17-20)

Introduction:
Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, ruled over Judah for twenty-five years . He obviously mimicked some of the good traits of his father and turned out to be one of the better kings in the history of Israel. (17:3,4)

I. His Walk – ch. 17

A. As his father (14:6-8), he believed in a strong national defense. (17:1,2,13-19)

This is never inconsistent with godliness if the military is in place for the proper reasons.

B. “His heart was lifted up in the ways of the Lord.” (vs.6) This resulted in:

[1]. Taking away the places of idolatry (vs.6)
[2]. He sent Levites and teachers to teach the Word of God throughout the land. (vs.7-9)
His testimony was honored. (vs. 10-13)

II. His Warts – ch. 18

Affinity with Ahab (vs.1) – II Cor. 5:14-18
The false prophets always outnumber the true ones. - (18:4-8)
The world always desires a positive message.- (18:9-15)
The vision of the lying spirit from God - (18:18-22; II Thess. 2:9-12)
Micaiah’s reward for speaking the truth - (18:25,26)
Ahab’s demise – (18:28-34)

III. His Works – ch. 19

Jehoshaphat is chastised by the prophet for his affinity with Ahab. (vs.2,3)
This seems to result in a greater desire to see equitable justice established
throughout the land. - (vs. 5-11; Deut. 16:18-20)

IV. His Worries – ch. 20

A great multitude of enemies gather themselves together against Jehoshaphat. (vs. 1,2)
He proclaims a time of fasting and prayer. (vs. 5-13)
The battle is declared to be the Lord’s. (vs. 15)
The appointed singers went out before the army. (vs.21)
God ambushed the enemy because of the spiritual attitude of the people. (vs.22)
They gathered a lot of Egyptian junk. (vs. 25)
God brought fear on the world and left Jehoshaphat and his kingdom in peace. (vs.29) (Prov.16:7)
