Thou Annointest My Head With Oil
(Psalm 23:5)
Have You Been Anointed?
Three occasions for anointing with oil - all three indicate God setting something aside for a special use.
I. The Leper - (Lev. 14:1,2,10-18)
A. Leprosy in the Bible is always a picture of the sinner in great need.
B. It is a spiritual problem as indicated by the victim being sent to the priest, not the physician.
C. The oil is poured on his head (vs. 18) as part of the atonement.
D. When you recognize Jesus Christ as your Shepherd, He anoints your leprosy and cleanses you! (2 Cor. 1:20-22)
II. The Priest - (Ex. 30:22-30), Leprosy dealt with - (Lev. 22:4)
A. As a child of God, you have been anointed to the priesthood - (1 Pet. 2:9).
B. Why? - to "shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
C. We are recipients of God's mercy (vs. 10).
D. Act like a priest (vs. 11).
III. The King - (1 Sam. 16:1,13)
A. The king is the subject of the next chapter - (Ps. 24).
B. As a child of the King I am in line (Rom. 8:14-17; 2 Tim. 2:12).
C. Eventual kingship and all its entitlements come with salvation.
D. David was anointed King long before he became one.
IV. The Failure To Anoint Christ - (Lk. 7:36-50)
A. Is a failure to recognize him as the anointed one.
B. Failure to understand Christ's position in the father - (Ps. 45:6-7).
