Chapter Six
(Lesson Six - 6:1-24)

OUTLINE OF THE CHAPTER:

II. Walk in harmony, servants and masters (.5-9)

III. Be strong in the Lord (10-18)

IV. Paul's personal notes (19-24)

I. WALK IN HARMONY, CHILDREN AND PARENTS - (1-4)

It is interesting to note that the children are addressed first in verse one and the servants are addressed first in verse five. The same was found in chapter five when the wives were given their responsibilities before the husbands.

The Bible has much to say about a child's responsibilities to his or her parents. (Ex. 20:12) tells us "to honour thy father and thy mother". Honour goes a good way past mere obedience. (See also: Col. 3:20; Prov. 1:8; 2:1; 3:1 4:1,10; 5:1; 7:1; 14:23; Ps. 34:12; Deut. 25:15; Matt. 15:4; Mk. 7:10; Lk. 18:20).

"Fathers provoke not your children to wrath"! How? by bringing them up in nurture and admonition. Balance is the key. The proper ingredients in proportion.

"Nurture" -Def. - tender care, education, training; the act of nourishing or nursing.

"Admonition" - Def. - gentle or friendly reproof; counseling against a fault or error; expression of authoritative advice.

The key phrase is verse four "of the Lord."

II. WALK IN HARMONY, SERVANTS AND MASTERS - (5-9)

The greatest example of a servant found in the Bible, excluding the Lord Jesus, is found in (Gen. 24), Abraham's servant. The employer trusted completely the employee (24:2). The employer expected the employee to do everything he possibly could do (24:8). The employee prayed for his employer (24:12).

(See: 1 Tim. 6:1-4; Tit. 2:9,10; Col. 3 : 2 2)

"Wives ... as unto the Lord" (Eph. 5:22). "Children obey...in the Lord" (Eph. 6:1). "Servants be obedient ... as unto Christ." (Eph. 6: 5)

Serving your employer is part of the will of God for the employee (vs. 6).

Verse eight implies that there is a reward for faithful service as an employee, (Gal. 6:7,8; 2 Cor. 5:10; 1 Tim. 5:24,25).

" ... masters" (vs. 9) - Col. 4:1

How? "Put on the whole armour of God." Why? "...that Ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
